Elite Athletes Call on Iran to Prevent Execution of Boxing Champion

More than two dozen Olympic medal winners, trainers and additional global sports figures have endorsed a statement demanding a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is on death row in the nation.

Growing International Outrage

Amidst increasing global condemnation over the nation's increasing application of capital punishment as a means of oppression, the strongly worded appeal denounces the government's ruling to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for being involved in nationwide protests in 2019 and indicted of aiding an resistance movement. He has endured five years in incarceration, where he has been tortured and held in solitary confinement.

History of Executing Competitors

The statement said that the athlete's case was not unique and emphasized Iran’s past of executing sports champions for their convictions, including a national team leader, captain of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national sports titleholder, faced the death penalty.

Further endorsers to the statement include a yachting pioneer, who captained the inaugural all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the previous leader of the national squad an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Arrest and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was arrested in March 2020. The accusations against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through arson and ruin of state assets”. His sentence has been overturned on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the third attempt. His trial was condemned as “highly unjust” by advocates and bodies.

Appeal to United Nations

The urging to prevent the athlete's execution comes after a previous appeal to the United Nations official for human rights, endorsed by in excess of 100 human rights experts and groups, urging action to prevent the sports figure's death.

Death Penalty Surge
