The move from the Democratic National Committee to suppress the public viewing regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election appears stunning but entirely predictable. Averse to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body operates more like a PR firm than a political organization committed to building a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.
Reluctant to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Making public the findings might have shown that the leadership truly desire to foster honest conversation regarding the errors which allowed Donald Trump to return to the White House. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there is little to understand following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.
Our guiding principle: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a justification which was presented for withholding the report.
An autopsy report of substance would confront certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:
This refusal is consistent with a longstanding habit of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. It echoes an episode in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with a sitting president's decision for running for re-election right up until a poor public debate performance led to an exit.
At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were continually telling surveyors that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.
An honest analysis would also investigate issues about financial allocations, including how much money went to party strategists and ad buyers during an electoral effort that managed to spend a colossal war chest over a few months.
Fundamentally, the secrecy regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a submission toward the established hierarchy that oversaw a disastrous electoral effort. The message for the party's base – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – is that they cannot be trusted to see the lessons the insiders have learned from a report compiled from conversations with insiders.
A party unable to critically review where it went wrong is unlikely to break free from the pattern that proved so advantageous to their opponents.
